Sculptor

Maria Leal da Costa is a Portuguese sculptor, born in Évora in 1964. She studied interiors at António Arroio School and between 1982 and 1986 she attended the Sculpture course at Escola Superior de Belas Artes in Lisbon.

She is a member of the National Society of Fine Arts. He has exhibited his work since 1994. She has an atelier in Quinta do Barrieiro, Marvão, Portugal, where she lives and works since 1999 and develops his project Alentejo Sculpture Park. Books open doors for her to fly to unknown places, where she finds much of her inspiration showing how they are an open window to the world. Travel companion of Camões, Fernão Mendes Pinto, Fernando Pessoa, Sophia de Mello Breyner, Gonçalo M. Tavares, among other writers, she chisels her ramblings in iron, marble and bronze, inviting the public to embark with her on her flights, as if to transcend, discover and penetrate to the core to contemplate and transmit, demystify and teach us the pedagogy of a fragile planet, but always open to all of us. Her work is represented in Portugal and abroad, in public and private collections, namely in museums, municipalities, state bodies and private companies, such as: Museu da Cidade de Lisboa, Museu do Mármore de Vila Viçosa. Municipalities of Punta Humbria in Spain, Macao in China, San Francisco in the USA, Vilnius in Lithuania, Lisbon, Portalegre, Marvão, Castelo de Vide, Alter do Chão, Évora in Portugal. Banks BCP, Espírito Santo, Caja de Salamanca y Sória. Ministry of Culture of Portugal, Polytechnic Institute of Portalegre, Epul, College of Architects of Badajoz, Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation Library in Ponte Sor, Macau International Institute, Istituto Portoghese di Sant’Antonio in Rome.
